This session, organized in collaboration with Roche, explored how integrated multi-disease molecular testing can help countries maximize existing diagnostic infrastructure, reduce duplication, and improve access to timely TB testing. Drawing on Kenya’s experience, speakers examined practical opportunities to use HIV molecular testing platforms and high-throughput systems for TB testing, while addressing persistent challenges such as underused capacity, fragmented testing networks, high unit costs, and gaps in patient access. Professor Matilu Mwau, Senior Principal Clinical Research Scientist at the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), presented a cost analysis of TB testing on the Roche cobas 8800 system, offering practical insights for teams involved in diagnostic network optimization, budgeting, procurement, service integration, and scale-up of molecular testing. Edwin Muiruri, Product Manager: Molecular MTB, Hepatitis and Microbiology-Africa, Roche, illustrated how Roche high-throughput molecular systems support simultaneous multi-disease processing to maximize efficiency.
