ASLM Ambassador Program – Terms of Reference

Introduction

The African Society for Laboratory Medicine (ASLM) Ambassador Program is a prestigious initiative aimed at expanding ASLM’s reach, strengthening stakeholder engagement, and advocating for improved laboratory services across Africa. Ambassadors serve as trusted advocates, fostering collaborations, mobilizing resources, and enhancing the visibility of ASLM’s mission.

Purpose of the ASLM Ambassador Program

The ASLM Ambassador Program is designed to:

  • Promote awareness and visibility of ASLM’s mission and initiatives.
  • Strengthen engagement with key stakeholders in laboratory medicine and public health.
  • Support ASLM’s efforts in expanding membership and fostering partnerships.
  • Advocate for better diagnostics and laboratory services across Africa.
Ambassador Role and Responsibilities

Ambassadors act as key representatives of ASLM within their respective communities and professional networks. Their responsibilities include:

  • Advocacy: Promoting ASLM’s mission by raising awareness about laboratory medicine and diagnostics.
  • Engagement: Encouraging stakeholders, institutions, and individuals to become ASLM members.
  • Knowledge Sharing: Contributing to ASLM’s platforms by sharing expertise, best practices, and research.
  • Public Representation: Participating in ASLM events, conferences, and initiatives to enhance ASLM’s presence.
  • Resource Mobilization: Assisting ASLM in building strategic partnerships and securing funding opportunities.
Eligibility and Selection

Ambassadors will be appointed based on their background, influence, and alignment with ASLM’s mission. They may include students in laboratory medicine, professionals, government officials, public figures, and experts in the field. Individuals can apply directly or be nominated by others through the ASLM Ambassador Application Form.

Program Governance

The ASLM Ambassador Program will be overseen by ASLM’s leadership, including the Membership Manager and Steering Committee. Ambassadors will be invited to periodic check-ins to discuss progress, share insights, and contribute to ASLM’s initiatives.

Term and Commitment

Ambassadors will serve an initial one-year term, with the opportunity for renewal based on their contributions and engagement. While this is a voluntary role, ambassadors are expected to actively participate in ASLM initiatives and uphold the organization’s values.

The Ambassador shall act only as an agent of ASLM within limitations and guidance provided. ASLM is not bound by, or to, any commitment(s) made by the Ambassador unless written approval is obtained.

All materials produced relate to or in accordance with this program must be branded with the appropriate Society logo, using designated templates, and shared with ASLM prior to use (e.g. web portals, social media sites, presentations, training materials, etc.).

The Ambassador shall not publish or circulate any advertising matter, form letters, signs, business cards or other written materials concerning the Society without the Society’s written consent. All such materials shall belong to the Society exclusively and shall be returned to ASLM upon termination of this appointment period. The Ambassador shall not acquire any right to any trademark, patent, copyright or other form of intellectual or commercial property of ASLM.

Ethics

ASLM commits itself to the enhancement of laboratory medicine sciences for the promotion of human welfare and accumulation of knowledge. The Ambassador is bound by the ethics code of the Society.

Expenses

The ASLM Ambassadorship is a voluntary, unpaid position. The Ambassador shall be reimbursed by the Society for any business-related expenses which were reasonably and necessarily incurred in the performance of services hereunder, in accordance with explicit written approval from ASLM prior to the procurement. If the Ambassador is required to travel to perform any requested duties, ASLM shall adhere to guidance from relevant funding sources relating to reimbursement.

Interested individuals can apply or be nominated by completing the ASLM Ambassador Application Form. Applications will be reviewed by the Membership Manager and Steering Committee, with appointments made based on alignment with ASLM’s mission and potential impact.
