June 2024 LabCoP Monthly ECHO Session: WHO-recommended 3-test Algorithm Adoption Experience from Malawi and Monitoring Quality Through Self-assessment Using dHTS CMM

June 18, 2024

The June 2024 LabCoP ECHO Session covered Malawi’s experience adopting the World Health Organization’s recommended 3-test algorithm. The WHO recommends using a standard HIV testing strategy, with three consecutive reactive tests to provide an HIV positive diagnosis. Adoption of this guidance is based on country-level selection and verification of potential kits to use, or the use of results from other verification studies to ensure diagnostics selected are appropriate and limit the risk of misdiagnosis. The session presentations are made by Dr Violet Oramisi, the Regional M&E Advisor with ICAP-CQUIN; and Dr Rose Nyirenda, the Director of the National Program on HIV, Hepatitis and STIs with Malawi’s Ministry of Health. They cover Malawi’s adoption experience and initiatives to improve general HTS with national-level monitoring and implementation of improvement strategies.
