June 2023 LabCoP Monthly ECHO Session: Outcome-Driven Lab Networks – Eswatini’s Experience Using Key Performance Indicators to Drive Laboratory Performance

June 9, 2023

The June 2023 LabCoP ECHO session focused on using key performance indicators (KPIs) to drive laboratory network performance management. Just like any product or service industry, effective, efficient and reliable national laboratory network management relies on a deliberate and structured efforts to continuously look for critical areas that can aid or diminish performance and continuously monitor them. To accomplish this, lab leaders and managers select KPIs to track progress, evaluate results, and act based on outcomes. In this session, we review how the Eswatini Health Laboratory Services (EHLS) have established systems to hold all levels of the laboratory network to expected standards of performance. The EHLS team shares practical examples of how they monitor and evaluate supplier performance in a national health laboratory network, conduct quarterly performance reviews and more. Presentations were made by Sindisiwe Dlamini, Chief Laboratory Technologist, EHLS: and Buyi Simelane, Associate Director for Monitoring & Evaluation, EHLS/ICAP.
