July 2024 LabCoP Monthly ECHO Session – Setting up and Running a Sustainable National Equipment Maintenance and Calibration Center: Experience from Uganda
July 11, 2024
On 11 July 2024, ASLM’s LabCoP hosted a monthly ECHO session that focused on setting up and running a sustainable national equipment maintenance and calibration center and the experience from Uganda. Laboratory operations are often time-sensitive and require uninterrupted equipment functionality to ensure testing continuity. Improper equipment management leads to breakdowns, reduced productivity, low staff morale and financial loss due to wasted time and resources. Africa CDC recommends that laboratory directorates and ministries of health establish a national bioengineering calibration and maintenance facility to service, maintain and calibrate instruments within the laboratory network; this recommendation aligns to the Maputo declaration of 2008. In this LabCoP ECHO session, Dr. Susan Nabadda, Executive Director, Uganda National Health Laboratory and Diagnostic Services; Abdul Mutaka, Technical Manager; and Rose Achom, Quality Manager of the National Equipment Calibration Laboratory at Uganda’s National Health Laboratory and Diagnostic Services; shared the journey of the Uganda Ministry of Health, through the National Health Laboratory and Diagnostic services in conceptualizing, setting up and running a national equipment maintenance and calibration center that currently supports a broad equipment maintenance and calibration scope for both public and private sector laboratories in the country.
