The Regional Biosafety and Biosecurity TWG for Southern Africa was held on 27th March 2025. The virtual quarterly meeting focused on the progress and future plans of the Africa CDC Biosafety and Biosecurity Initiative (BBI) Initiative in Southern Africa.

The initiative was launched in response to identified gaps during evaluations, with priorities including establishing national legislation and a regional legal framework. 2025 is a significant year as it marks the beginning of the fifth year of the Biosafety and Biosecurity initiatives strategic plan. Notable achievements from implementation of the 5year plan include the development of a comprehensive biosafety and biosecurity framework, which has been validated by member states and is being domesticated in countries like Zambia, Lesotho, and Botswana.
