Pioneering a New Era in Laboratory Leadership in Africa

Today 3rd April 2025, laboratory leadership through the Laboratory Directors Forum (LabDF) convened to deliberate on the Blueprint Report, document set to be to guide laboratory leadership in Africa.

In his opening remarks, Mr. Nqobile Ndlovu emphasized the critical role of leadership in shaping the future of laboratory systems. Reflecting on progress made over the past 10-15 years, he acknowledged that while strides have been taken to strengthen lab systems, leadership has often been overlooked due to its complexity. Expressing gratitude for the support from the Gates Foundation, he underscored the collective responsibility of stakeholders to drive transformative change.

“I envision a future where laboratory leaders have a seat at the decision-making table,” he stated. “As champions of change, we must raise our voices, engage actively, and step forward to advance the agenda of laboratory system transformation. This is a watershed moment for leadership and governance in laboratory medicine.”

Dr. Susan Nabadda, Chair of LabDF, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of collective ownership of the Blueprint’s recommendations. She urged laboratory leaders to embrace advocacy, ensuring their voices are heard at policy-making levels.

LabDF ReportLara Vojnov, Chief Scientist of the Global Health Impact Group, presented the status report and Blueprint, both of which have been developed through extensive consultation with key stakeholders, including donors, partners, and laboratory leaders. While the status report outlines the current landscape of laboratory directorates across Africa, the Blueprint charts a forward-looking path to foster growth, sustainability, and resilience within the continent’s laboratory systems.

This initiative marks a significant milestone in strengthening laboratory networks and systems across Africa. It is a call to action—a moment to redefine the trajectory of laboratory leadership and governance, ensuring a healthier future for all.
