The African Society for Laboratory Medicine (ASLM) continues to advance laboratory medicine across the continent through initiatives focused on strengthening laboratory networks and systems, capacity building, essential skills training, pandemic preparedness and response, and laboratory quality improvement.
From November 20-21, 2024, ASLM’s Director of Programs, Dr. Talkmore Maruta, led a consultative meeting in Johannesburg, South Africa. The meeting brought together a team of experts, including the ASLM’s Laboratory Quality Management System (LQMS) Technical Working Group (TWG), to develop this comprehensive strategy.
Dr. Talkmore Maruta highlighted that the strategy will strengthen ASLM’s role as a leader in laboratory medicine. It will also advocate for quality diagnostics to address pressing health needs across Africa, contributing significantly to better health outcomes.
The LQMS strategy aims to improve consistency, ensure sustainability, and position ASLM as the leading organization for laboratory quality systems in Africa. It will guide the organization’s efforts to keep laboratory services relevant, impactful, and aligned with the health needs of both local communities and the continent as a whole.
As a leader in laboratory quality improvement, ASLM has established itself by deploying trusted tools and fostering professional growth through structured training and mentorship programs. However, to enhance its impact further, ASLM has identified the need for a standardized LQMS strategy. This strategy will align its internal projects and support external implementation across African countries, ensuring consistency with its strategic objectives and long-term vision.
