April 9 2026 ECHO

Task sharing involves the rational redistribution of tasks among health workforce teams with Specific tasks moved, from highly qualified health workers to health workers with shorter training and fewer qualifications in order to make more efficient use of the available human resources for health.
Global recommendations and guidelines on task sharing propose the adoption of a task sharing approach as a method of strengthening and expanding the health workforce to support access to health services.
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends task sharing of point-of-care testing with non-laboratory personnel, including lay health workers (LHWs), to improve access to diagnostic services, especially in resource-limited settings.
Whereas WHOs recommendation on task sharing has generally lasted for quite some time now, task sharing for POCT with lay health workers , remains marginally practiced.

In this session presented by Dr. Dr Zee Ndlovu, Regional Epidemiologist & Diagnostics Advisor,
Médecins Sans Frontières , we discuss findings from a review on national policy uptake of task sharing for POC testing with LHW and its implementation across 19 African countries. We further review some key considerations for the scale-up of task sharing with lay cadres in national programs
