ASLM Supports Ghana’s AMR, AMC, and AMU Data Review, Analysis, and Annual Report Development Workshop

From 17–21 February 2025, the African Society for Laboratory Medicine (ASLM), with funding from The Fleming Fund, and in collaboration with the Ghana National AMR Coordination Secretariat (AMRCC),  hosted a five-day workshop in Ada, Volta Region, Ghana. This workshop aims to review and analyze Antimicrobial resistance (AMR), Antimicrobial consumption (AMC), and Antimicrobial use (AMU) data across the human, animal, and environmental health sectors to develop the Ghana’s 2024 Annual AMR Surveillance Report.

The workshop convened key experts from the AMR Secretariat, the National Reference Laboratory, leading academic institutions, the Food and Drugs Authority, and the veterinary and environmental sectors.

In his opening remarks, Mr. Saviour Yevutsey, National Coordinator of the AMR Secretariat, underscored  the critical role of high -quality data and effective communication in shaping informed policy decisions. He recognized ASLM’s continuous efforts in establishing, implementing, and strengthening Ghana’s AMR surveillance system. Through initiatives such as MAAP, EQuAFRICA, QWArS, and TADE, ASLM has provided capacity- building training and technical support to ehance surveillance effort.

By analyzing and validating AMR surveillance data, the workshop seeks strengthen laboratory-based surveillance systems, ensuring accuracy and reliability in Ghana’s national AMR reporting. This initiative aligns with ASLM’s broader mission to improve laboratory networks, enhance technical capacity, and foster sustainable governance structures to effectively combat AMR.

The five-day workshop culminated in drafting of the Ghana’s 2024 Annual AMR Surveillance Report -a significant milestone in the country’s effort to strengthen AMR surveillance, guide public health strategies, and support evidence-based policy decisions.
