ASLM Report Highlights Impact of PEPFAR Funding Freeze on Laboratory Services in Africa
ASLM is pleased to release a timely report examining the effects of the United States Government (USG) funding freeze, particularly under the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) on laboratory services in partner countries across Africa. The report draws on findings from a recent survey conducted through ASLM’s Laboratory Directors Forum (LabDF), which engaged national public health laboratory leaders across the continent. Key insights reveal critical disruptions in diagnostic systems, including challenges in accessing essential reagents, reduced service delivery, and difficulties maintaining equipment, transport systems, and trained personnel. Status Report on Laboratory Leadership in Africa
ASLM released a new report that presents key findings from a consultative and analytical review of national laboratory directorates across the African continent, with a focus on leadership and governance. The report reflects insights gathered from stakeholders across diverse regional and national contexts, examining both structural and functional elements of laboratory leadership. This report serves as a standalone document to highlight these findings, and also serves as a foundation for the development of an action plan to better support and further improve national laboratory directorates across the continent in the years to come. Blueprint: Laboratory Leaders of the Future
ASLM is proud to share its newly released Blueprint for Laboratory Leadership in Africa, a strategic document designed to guide and align national, regional, and global efforts to strengthen laboratory leadership across the continent. Built on the foundation laid by the 2024 Status Report on Laboratory Leadership in Africa, this Blueprint consolidates evidence-based insights and stakeholder input into a set of clear and actionable recommendations. Rather than prescribing a one-size-fits-all approach, the Blueprint acknowledges Africa’s diverse political, social, and epidemiological contexts. It is meant to be flexible and adaptive serving as a shared framework that enables stakeholders to design solutions tailored to their unique national and regional needs.
