This exercise responded to the critical need for strengthening epidemic preparedness through scenario-based training. Specifically, the simulation focused on evaluating the diagnostic capacity and responsiveness of Burkina Faso’s laboratory system to a suspected outbreak of dengue fever, using established standard operating procedures (SOPs) for rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs).
The activity was implemented in two phases. During the first phase, participants developed a scenario tailored to the national context, in close consultation with relevant technical stakeholders. In the second phase, the simulation exercise was executed with the active participation of key actors from the laboratory network. A final dissemination session allowed for the presentation of findings and key recommendations.
The simulation exercise provided an opportunity to:
- Test the national laboratory system’s capacity to detect and respond to a priority disease,
- Identify strengths and areas for improvement in diagnostic readiness,
- Reinforce coordination and communication among key players within the healthcare system.
This initiative represents a significant step toward building sustainable diagnostic preparedness in Burkina Faso. It complements ongoing regional efforts to improve health security, supports International Health Regulations (IHR) core capacities, and promotes rapid, coordinated responses to emerging public health threats.
