March 2024 LabCoP Extended ECHO Session: Electronic return of results: Experience from a pilot in Malawi

April 24, 2024

On 28 March 2024, ASLM’s LabCoP convened an Extended ECHO session focusing on a pilot in Malawi of electronic return of results. Viral load (VL) test results serve as the gold standard for monitoring antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence and treatment response. However, countries encounter delays to deliver VL results from testing laboratories to end users when paper-based systems are used. Late return of results inevitably impacts clients’ quality of care and clinical outcomes. In an effort to address this challenge, Malawi’s Ministry of Health, with support from Cooper/Smith, developed an open-source application that utilises SMS and USSD technology to deliver VL results to clients and healthcare providers electronically. This application was piloted in 14 healthcare facilities across Malawi and was integrated with the laboratory information management (LIMS) and specimen transportation systems. In this session, presented by Christopher Mwase, the Technical Coordinator, and Rachel Haggard, Project Manager, Viral Load Results Return at Cooper Smith, we look at the impact of this on test results turn-around-time and how it impacts overall patient care.
