The study collected information from African countries about existing national guidance documents and the current process of decision making when selecting tier-specific in-vitro diagnostics (IVD). The lessons learnt represent useful insights on what works and what does not, that could be the basis for recommendations to supporting countries and stakeholders in developing and implementing a National Essential Diagnostics List (NEDL) or a similar guidance document. The accompanying guide is intended as a companion to the World Health Organization’s publication, ‘Selection of Essential In Vitro Diagnostics at Country Level’, to provide practical guidance to African countries on developing an NEDL.
