ASLM/EDCTP Mentorship “Training of Trainers” Workshop Conducted in Ethiopia
ASLM has partnered with the European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) to support capacity strengthening and quality management systems (QMS) improvement at 16 laboratories in 13 African countries. As part of the ASLM/EDCTP project, ASLM organised a “Training of Trainers” (TOT) Mentorship Workshop from 5-7 May 2014 at the Jupiter International Hotel in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. In this TOT workshop, laboratory managers and quality officers from Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Gabon, Ghana, Malawi, Nigeria, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, as well as four ASLM Project Officers, actively participated.
The objectives of the three-day workshop focused on increasing participants’ understanding of ASLM/EDTCP project goals; project implementation plans; strengthening their mentorship and facilitation skills, and enhancing trainees’ mentorship knowledge (with the intention of suggesting improvements/changes to address critical QMS challenges through mentorship and ongoing technical support).
The goal of the workshop was to provide embedded mentors with the skills needed to act in the absence of ASLM Project Officers. Project Officers will visit the selected laboratories and provide continued technical support, in line with a jointly developed mentorship schedule laboratory action plan, and mentorship plans, which were developed in partnership with the ASLM Project Officers.
