ASLM INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

ASLM is launching an exciting new internship opportunity! It is a twelve-month training program focused on the development of young medical laboratory professionals seeking to strengthen their leadership qualities, and help them identify their career pathway in public health. This program will provide interns with hands-on experience and enhance their skillset in laboratory systems, diagnostics and project management, and the opportunity to interact with professionals, researchers, and policymakers, fostering a collaborative environment that contributes to their professional development.

During the 12-month program, participants will gain first-hand experience working within the ASLM system and in technical areas like:

  • Laboratory Networks and Systems Strengthening
  • Anti-Microbial Resistance
  • Pathogen Genomics and Bioinformatics
  • Quality Management Systems
  • Communications and much more

Most activities can be performed from the participant’s home country, and when travel is required, ASLM will cover work-related travel expenses and travel insurance. While the internship is unpaid, participants will receive a stipend of USD $300.00 to offset learning materials, data, and communication costs.

This program has the potential to change the trajectory of the participants’ career in laboratory medicine and help them focus on their specialty. Abdulmumuni Samuel Aliyu, an alumnus, spoke highly of his experience, noting that the editorial skills he gained through contributing to ASLM’s magazine, Lab Culture, seamlessly translated into his current role as a research manuscript reviewer. He said, ‘the internship both enhanced my communication skills and demonstrated the versatile application of scientific knowledge in various professional contexts.’

Interested candidates must be citizens of an African Union Member State, hold a first degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences or a related field, and have graduated within the last ten years. For full details and application instructions, please visit ASLM’s website via this link and apply by 10 May, 2024. Join us in shaping the future of laboratory medicine and public health.
