The African Journal of Laboratory Medicine now indexed in PubMed Central database

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – 15 September 2017 – The African Society for Laboratory Medicine (ASLM) extends congratulations to its scholarly journal, the African Journal of Laboratory Medicine (AJLM), which has been accepted for inclusion in PubMed Central (PMC). PMC is a free, full-text archive of biomedical and life science journal articles maintained by the US National Institutes of Health’s National Library of Medicine (NIH/NLM). Articles deposited in PMC are also searchable from the NIH/NLM PubMed database. PubMed includes 26 million citations for journal articles, author manuscripts, and electronic books and is perhaps the most familiar citation database to researchers around the world.

“Indexing AJLM in the NIH PubMed Central is a historic milestone in advancing laboratory medicine in Africa,” said former Editor-in-Chief and Director of Africa CDC Dr. John Nkengasong. “This offers AJLM a unique leadership role to shape the cutting edge of laboratory medicine research in Africa.”

All articles published in AJLM from 2015 onwards are now available PMC. Older articles are being re-formatted to meet the archive’s technical requirements and should be available within 3-4 months. By the end of this calendar year, all AJLM articles will be available in the PMC archive – and be discoverable through PubMed.

“We built AJLM with a goal of quality and effective scientific communication, and a dream of one day becoming a solid pillar for excellence of laboratory medicine in Africa,” said founding editor Dr. Elizabeth Luman. “Inclusion in the PMC archive is yet another indication that the journal has proven itself to be indispensable platform for the ever-increasing scientific endeavors on the continent. Congratulations to all who have worked so tirelessly to turn this dream into a reality!”

ASLM members are encouraged not only to read and share AJLM articles, which are available free online from the journal’s website, http://ajlmonline.org/, but to submit their own work. Members interested in submitting a paper should read AJLM’s instructions to authors page to determine the appropriate article type, then create an author account, if they do not already have one. To submit, simply click on the “Submit Online” link on the right-hand side of the page and follow the instructions.

“Congratulations to our outstanding Editorial Board led by Prof. Iruka Okeke, AJLM’s Editor-in-Chief, and the relentless efforts of our Managing Editor, Ms. Bethanie Rammer,” said Dr. Ali Elbireer, ASLM’s Chief Executive Officer. “To be accepted into PubMed Central is an international testament to the quality and scientific integrity of the AJLM. This will certainly open a new window of opportunity to all laboratory researchers in Africa and similar settings worldwide to share their work and enrich the pathology body of knowledge.”

The African Journal of Laboratory Medicine (AJLM) is the official journal of the African Society for Laboratory Medicine, which was launched in 2011 with support from the World Health Organization, the African Union, the United States (US) Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, the World Bank, the Clinton Foundation, UNAIDS, and others. The Society’s goal is to advance the profession of laboratory medicine in Africa. As an international, peer-reviewed journal, AJLM takes a broad perspective on the role of the laboratory and laboratorians in clinical care and public health efforts, providing a much-needed forum for communication for laboratory professionals with each other and with other biomedical scientists and clinicians, the medical community, public health officials, and policy makers.
