Science and Innovation

ASLM through its science office, works across programs to generate and promote utilization of scientific evidence for strengthening laboratory medicine in Africa.

Key to this mandate is training and capacity building of agile workforce both within ASLM and laboratory professionals across Africa in the areas of implementation science and operational research. Science Office seeks to forge strategic partnerships with governmental bodies, development partners , research and laboratory institutions to advance innovative solutions in delivery of laboratory services and diagnostic products. ASLM promotes dissemination and access to cutting -edge science through their open source journal, the African Journal of Laboratory Medicine that publishes articles in all areas that contribute to and advance the laboratory medicine practices of Africa.

We are dedicated to fostering professional growth, advancing scientific knowledge, and building strategic partnerships that strengthen health systems across Africa. Through targeted workshops, impactful publications, and collaborations with leading institutions, we empower professionals and drive innovation to meet public health needs.

Workshops and Training
  • Hosted 17 writing and young professional workshops through AJLM since 2014, engaging and equipping emerging experts.
  • Trained an estimated 450 participants in scientific writing and publishing.
  • Published 446 articles since 2012, including 296 articles from 2018–2024 in the African Journal of Laboratory Medicine (AJLM).
  • Achieved 1.9 million downloads and 1,900 cross-reference citations, reflecting widespread influence and readership.

Established a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Wits Innovation Hub to foster innovation and knowledge-sharing.
