The African Society for Laboratory Medicine (ASLM) is a pan-African professional body working to advocate for the critical role and needs of laboratory medicine and networks throughout Africa. Africa is rapidly growing but faces major health challenges including epidemics of HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria, and new priorities such as Ebola and other global health security threats. Strengthened laboratory capacity and surveillance in Africa are critical to overcoming the burden of disease and ensuring a healthy future for the continent. ASLM addresses these challenges by working collaboratively with governments, local and international organizations, implementing partners, and the private sector.

We are seeking a Senior Brand and Communications Manager to develop and lead a brand and communications strategy that will help drive the transformation of ASLM, clearly communicate its missions and vision, support messaging and positioning of the organization at the forefront in the health sector nationally, regionally and globally. The successful candidate will bring a leadership style that is both strategic and hands on, to support the works of our talented team.

The appointee will bring an entrepreneurial approach and creative flair to this role and lead ASLM team in strengthening our external positioning through website materials, policy briefs, blogs, media works and promoting ASLM in global and regional key events. Your experience will include the leadership of a refreshed strategy in another, non for profits organizations, particularly in the health sector. You will need to demonstrate the capacity to work across cultures in Africa and with overseas partners. 

Key Responsibilities 

Develop and implement brand and communications strategy

  • Establish the overall brand and communications strategy and the general objectives of the Communications Unit and work in an independent and proactive manner to meet the objectives.
  • Manage the operations of the Communications Unit, including coordinating the Unit’s strategic functions such as strategic communications, social media, infographics, branding, audio-visual, campaigns, event planning and country and regional communications support.
  • Ensure highest technical quality, timeliness, consistency and impact of ASLM’s communications and public relations activities through initiating and overseeing the development and implementation of relevant guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Provide oversight, coordination and advice to all technical units and functions in their communications efforts.
  • Collaborate with relevant staff and leadership groups to provide reputation management during emergencies or when ASLM is negatively portrayed in the media
  • Review regularly communications and brand strategies and guidelines and revise as necessary, leading the whole process in terms of strategic inputs, planning and delivery. 


  • Actively steer the process of brand strengthening, ensuring that ASLM gets a strategic focus with clear and measurable goals for brand development in line with ASLM’s five years strategic plan
  • Carry out brand orientation sessions, trainings and workshops for new and continuing staff, ensuring that the brand concept is explained and that the contents are clear to all staffs
  • In consultation with the management, ensure that adequate resources are planned and priorities set for the required brand development activities
  • Work to ensure that the promotion of the brand is incorporated in the whole ASLM planning structure, working to achieve the full benefits of a strong brand
  • Takes charge of printing for all branded materials which is to be done centrally 

Media and public relations

  • Identify opportunities for media coverage of ASLM’s programmes by monitoring national, regional and global health related media coverage, key events and developments related to the context and programme milestones.
  • Prepare press releases, editorials, pitch stories to media agencies on behalf of ASLM and its partners
  • Act as a media spokesperson or support ASLM team and Board in providing interviews to approved media outlets
  • Respond to requests for media outputs from affiliate offices and staff as approved by the ASLM leadership
  • Foster relations with the media and press and communications focal points in like-minded organizations.
  • Develop and manage communications networks across Africa region, including regular consultations.

Educational/ Position Requirements:

  • University degree (Master’s level) in Communications, Media, Public Relations, health or social science relevant to the position
  • 5-10 years’ demonstrated professional experience in senior management in the areas of strategic communications, media and public relations, at least 2 of which at the international level
  • Self-motivated and able to work to own initiative and be hands on
  • High level of personal organization and attention to detail
  • Autonomy and ability to drive own agenda
  • A positive ‘can-do’ attitude with creative flair
  • Results driven, including full budget management
  • Capable of problem solving in fast-paced environment
  • Good strategic thinker with desire to make an impact
  • Lots of passion for developing brands and ability to influence stakeholders with confidence
