The African Society for Laboratory Medicine (ASLM) is a pan-African professional body working to advocate for the critical role and needs of laboratory medicine and networks throughout Africa. Africa is rapidly growing but faces major health challenges including epidemics of HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria, and new priorities such as Ebola and other global health security threats. Strengthened laboratory capacity and surveillance in Africa are critical to overcoming the burden of disease and ensuring a healthy future for the continent. ASLM addresses these challenges by working collaboratively with governments, local and international organizations, implementing partners, and the private sector.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

Business Development

  • Lead on developing ASLM’s business development strategy including setting annual goals and targets
  • Develop and roll out BD standard operating procedures (SOPs) with clear indications on how all stages of the business development cycle will be planned for and executed against, including the assignment roles and responsibilities for ASLM staff across other departments (e.g. programs team, finance team, M&E team etc.)
  • Lead a team of business development professionals to set up and execute key BD systems and processes as outlined below:
    • Monitor funding trends and grant opportunities to track the release of procurements, develop a strong pipeline of priority donors, analyze funding announcements for potential fit with ASLM’s priorities and recommend specific funding opportunities to pursue.
    • Support scoping and intelligence gathering efforts to ensure ASLM is well positioned and has secured the right partnerships for priority bids in the pipeline.
    • Lead on facilitating inclusive and collaborative program design and strategy sessions for proposals that effectively bring together technical, operations, finance and leadership teams.
    • Drive proposal development, fully owning and coordinating the process—develop a timeline, put together a proposal team, gather inputs from technical/program leads, work with finance teams on budget development, create supplementary materials, and contribute to proposal writing and reviews
    • Steward key donor relationships, managing donor visits and reporting where needed with support from the program team and other leadership based on the donor
    • Hone systems, by documenting and implementing business processes, procedures, and templates to improve the workflow for business development
  • Get senior leadership at ASLM excited about being part of the fundraising process and hold them accountable to play their role by creating buy-in around responsibilities and timelines.
  • Lead the development of a stakeholder engagement plan including tiering priority donors/partners, developing relationship goals/outcomes, key talking points/messages etc. to support other senior leaders and Board members at ASLM to increase visibility with key stakeholders—facilitate their ability to present at strategic speaking opportunities, donor events, and conferences to increase visibility and expand networks.
  • Lead fundraising efforts for the ASLM Biennial conferences, including defining a fundraising strategy, identifying potential funders, and managing the funding relationships.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS 

  • University degree in international health, development, or equivalent and 12+ years experience or graduate degree and 10+ years experience;
  • Master’s in Business Administration or equivalent an added advantage
  • Substantial work experience in international development or global health and adjacent sectors;
  • A senior leader with an entrepreneurial mindset who is able to rally staff around ASLM’s mission and fundraising priorities;
  • Extensive experience working with traditional bilateral donors, foundations and philanthropy groups on fundraising, business development, proposal management and relationship management
  • Demonstrated team and people management abilities with a focus on growing staff, mentoring and coaching junior professionals;
  • Demonstrated ability to engage effectively with external strategic partners, donors, and stakeholders;
  • A thoughtful systems thinker with grounded, pragmatic understanding of the complexities of our work;
  • Outstanding cross-cultural communication skills, including the ability to relate respectfully with staff at all levels, ages, genders, nationalities and orientations as well as across work areas;
  • Excellent spoken, analytical, and writing skills in English and preferably a second language (eg, French);
  • Willingness to travel internationally up-to 10-15%
