My names are Samuel Mwangi Njoroge. I am 26 years of age living and born in Kenya. I am the first child in a family of three, with one young brother and one sister. I am currently pursuing Master of Science in Medical Microbiology and working on my project. I am also currently attached at The Centre for Microbiology Research- KEMRI. I have a background in Medical Laboratory Science, a field I hold a Bachelors from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology where am also registered for my graduate studies.
I am eager to start a career in infectious diseases research. This is because Africa still struggles with a heavier infectious disease burden. And maybe it’s because Antimicrobial susceptibility profiling of bacteria after initial identification is overlooked in Kenya and Africa as a whole. My career goals are therefore to take part in Surveillance of Antimicrobial Resistance in Kenya and sensitize clinicians on the importance of drug susceptibility profiles before prescription. Clinical inappropriate use of antimicrobials could greater lead to drug resistance than self-medication of antibiotics. In a capacity building initiative, my career objectives are; to acquire knowledge of accurate identification of bacteria pathogens, to acquire molecular knowledge base of drug resistance mechanisms of common aetiologies of diarrhoea in both community and nosocomial acquired infections, to acquire skills in antimicrobial stewardship, to acquire leadership skills in orchestrating a research team and learn communication skills that will lead to effective relations with other collaborators.
I’m currently working on antimicrobial resistance of E. coli. I would want to compare if E. coli from severely malnourished and normal children who have diarrhoea and below five years of age differ in their resistance patterns. Offering me as an ASM in country consultant, will greatly motivate me, and help me gain the much hands on field experience to know the bottlenecks in microbiology research and participate in capacity building back in Kenya.
The ASM in country consultancy will also influence me attain my career objectives and in return to pass the acquired knowledge to fellow work-mates and students in the microbiology field back home as a way of giving back to the community.
