ASLM Senior Leadership

The African Society for Laboratory Medicine (ASLM) is an international pan-African organisation recognised by the African Union and duly registered with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Ethiopia. The mission of ASLM is to advance laboratory medicine and networks in Africa.
 

 Dr. Tsehaynesh Messele1Dr. Tsehaynesh Messele, Chief Executive Officer (CEO)

The career of Dr. Messele in public health has involved research, laboratory system development and management, emergency management, and high level leadership in the public sector. From 2004-2011, Dr. Messele served as the Director General of the Ethiopian Health & Nutrition Research Institute  (EHNRI). Dr. Messele initiated and led the development of the first National Laboratory Strategic Plan in Ethiopia, as well as its revision into a future integrated system plan. Dr. Messele also formally served as National Programme Manager for the Ethio-Netherlands AIDS Research Project (ENARP), responsible for leading the large bilateral collaboration project. The project established a state-of-the-art HIV laboratory, conducted two long term cohort studies as well as 10 PhD level trainings and several short term trainings, and built capacity at many different levels. Dr. Messele separately served as the Team Leader for the Immuno-haematology/ Pathology Research Team, the Ethiopian Laboratory Manager for ENARP, Head of the National Referral Laboratory for AIDS, Head of Immuno-haematology and Virology/Rickettsiology Divisions, and as a Viro-immunologist for National Referral Laboratory for AIDS at EHNRI. Most recently, she worked as a senior technical advisor for the Federal HIV Prevention and Control Office.

Throughout her distinguished career, Dr. Messele has published and/or co-authored more than 60 publications in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters. In 2002, the Ethiopian Public Health Association (EPHA) recognised her work with the prestigious "Young Public Health Researcher Award" for outstanding performance in public health research.

She has also chaired and served as member of different executive boards and committees, including the role of executive board member of the International Association of Public Health Institutes based in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.
